Read the marks consistently
Most imperial tapes divide each inch into halves, quarters, eighths, and sixteenths. Count the smallest graduation used by the measurement and reduce the fraction when recording it.
Keep the tape straight and under consistent tension. A diagonal or sagging tape reads longer than the true distance.
Use one unit for the math

Should I round tape measurements?

Should I measure in more than one place?
Yes. Walls, ceilings, and cabinets are rarely perfectly square. Measure at both ends and near the center, then plan around the tightest usable dimension.
Why is the tape hook loose?
The hook is designed to slide by roughly its own thickness so inside and outside measurements can both reference the correct zero point. A damaged or bent hook should be checked against a known dimension.
