Define the usable design area

Measure between the finished boundaries that visually contain the frames: inside corners, casing, chair rail, baseboard, crown, or built-ins. Do not use the full room dimensions.

List switches, receptacles, thermostats, vents, and furniture that should influence the composition. A mathematically centered frame can still look wrong when it collides with a permanent feature.

Balance margins, gaps, and frame count

The open wall between frames is normally read more strongly than the molding itself. Keep repeated gaps consistent unless the architecture gives you a reason not to. Outer margins may match the gaps or be slightly larger.

Test frame count at the room's normal viewing distance. Fewer wider frames feel calmer; more narrow frames create rhythm. Tape the outside edges of one or two frames before committing.

Lay out from centerlines

Use a level and one dependable baseline. Mark complete rectangles or crossing corner ticks before attaching molding. Measure both diagonals of each rectangle; equal diagonals confirm that the frame is square.

Cut test miters from offcuts because wall molding rarely meets at exactly the theoretical angle. Assemble on the wall or preassemble only when your walls and material are straight enough for the method.

Finish for clean shadow lines

Fill nail holes with a product suited to the molding, sand without rounding profiles, and caulk only the molding-to-wall seam. Heavy caulk in miter joints tends to shrink and reveal the gap.

Prime raw cuts and patched areas. Side lighting exposes uneven joints, so inspect the wall from multiple angles before the final coat.
