Start with an outer boundary
Measure the wall area the arrangement should occupy, taking nearby furniture, switches, sconces, and door swings into account. Treat that rectangle as the composition boundary.
Record each frame's outside dimensions, including the frame itself. Artwork dimensions alone will produce incorrect gaps.
Plan visual spacing
Keep the visible gaps between frame edges consistent where possible. Mixed sizes can still feel orderly when rows, columns, or centerlines align.
Arrange templates on the floor or tape paper rectangles to the wall. View the group from the primary seating or entry position before making holes.
Convert frame positions to hook positions
The top of a frame is not the hanging point. Measure the tightened wire rise or hardware offset on every frame, then transfer that distance from the planned frame edge.
Use anchors suitable for the wall and frame weight. Mark each hook from shared horizontal and vertical references rather than from the previously hung frame.

Should I round gallery wall measurements?
Enter the measurements you can verify, then keep the calculator's more precise result while laying out the project. Marking from one reference edge prevents small rounding differences from accumulating.
Should I measure in more than one place?
Yes. Walls, ceilings, and cabinets are rarely perfectly square. Measure at both ends and near the center, then plan around the tightest usable dimension.
What is the best gap between frames?
There is no single required gap. Pick a gap that is clearly intentional, test it with the real frame profiles, and apply it consistently across the composition.
