Measure the finished wall, not the room

Measure the exact span that will receive the treatment. Stop at inside corners, casing, built-ins, or another deliberate endpoint. If baseboard or crown molding changes the usable height, measure the clear vertical distance rather than assuming the nominal ceiling height.

Check the wall width near the top, middle, and bottom. Use the dimension at the height where the battens must fit most tightly. A bowed corner can otherwise leave the last panel visibly narrower.

Understand equal panel spacing

Equal spacing refers to the visible opening between adjacent battens, not the distance from one batten center to the next. The calculator subtracts all board widths from the wall width and divides the remaining open space evenly.

Choose the panel count by proportion rather than by chasing one universal spacing rule. Narrow walls usually look calmer with fewer panels; a long wall can support more repeats. Mock up two adjacent battens with painter's tape and view them from the main doorway.

Transfer the layout without cumulative error

Start from the same reference edge for every mark. Mark each batten centerline from that edge using the calculated positions instead of stepping a spacer across the wall. Independent measurements prevent a slightly misplaced early batten from shifting every one after it.

Use a level or laser to project each centerline vertically. Dry-fit the first, middle, and last pieces before fastening the full run. If the wall is out of plumb, preserve the visual spacing at eye level and scribe an edge only where necessary.

  • Dry-fit key pieces, then glue and nail

Plan material and obstacles

Buy material by total linear footage, then add a practical waste allowance for defects, test cuts, and miters. Long, straight pieces matter on tall battens, so inspect boards before leaving the store.

Decide how outlets and switches will meet the new surface before installation. Electrical boxes may need listed extensions when trim changes the finished wall plane. Follow local electrical requirements or use a qualified professional where needed.

Should I round board and batten measurements?

Should I measure in more than one place?

Yes. Walls, ceilings, and cabinets are rarely perfectly square. Measure at both ends and near the center, then plan around the tightest usable dimension.

They do not have to align with every stud when an appropriate adhesive and fastening method is used, but locating framing helps you choose secure fasteners and avoid hidden utilities.
